Dryer runs but no heat: the $14 fix in 90% of cases
Difficultyeasy
Time45 minutes
Cost$5 to $60
Before you buy anything
Unplug it. Pull the back panel (or the front, depending on brand). You are looking for three things in series: the thermal fuse, the high-limit thermostat, and the heating element.
Test with a multimeter
Set it to continuity (the beep). Pull one wire off each part and test across its two terminals:
- Thermal fuse: should beep. If it does not, it is open and that is your problem. But it opened for a reason, usually a clogged vent. Clean the vent run or the new fuse will blow too.
- High-limit thermostat: should beep at room temperature.
- Heating element: should read roughly 8 to 12 ohms. Infinite = broken coil.
Parts
Search your model number plus the part name. A thermal fuse is $5 to $14. An element is $30 to $60. Both are two screws and two spade connectors.
What went wrong for me
The first time I did this I replaced the element when it was the fuse. Test everything before ordering.
